Guardian Angels, Mt. Washington

1890

St. Gregory Seminary established in Mt. Washington for high school and college men, opening in 1891. It moved to downtown Cincinnati in 1904, when Mount St. Mary’s Seminary moved from Price Hill into the building.

1892

Guardian Angels Parish organized at the seminary with 45 families, and a small brick church with a prominent bell tower was constructed on the same road.

1895

Guardian Angels school opened in a one-room building.

1904

More than 11 acres acquired for a parish cemetery.

1948

New building built for gym and used as the church to accommodate growing population.

1964

Mass moved to church undercroft during construction of new church. The interior redesign included a raised dais in the transept to celebrate Mass “in the round” with a drop ceiling.

1971

Present Guardian Angels Church opened. Designed by Elmer H. Schmidt in an art deco style, it featured an unusual arrangement of square and rectangular stained glass windows and a stylized Romanesque façade.

2005

Parish Center dedicated.

2007

Guardian Angels school named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

2016

Two columbaria for cremated remains added to the parish cemetery.

2023

“St. Gregory the Great” name adopted by the Guardian Angels, St. John Fisher, and Immaculate Heart of Mary Family of Parishes. Church lighting, roof and ceilings renovated; Stations of the Cross installed in clerestory; statues and tabernacle cleaned and restored; and historic crucifix restored and hung over the tabernacle.

2024

Church interior painted, artificial turf installed at the school playfield, and new pews and flooring installed, including a tile walkway to the tabernacle and chairs, with kneelers facing the tabernacle for adoration.
